Authorship and Contributorship

The Journal of Islamic Humanities and Social Inquiry (JIHSI) adheres to the authorship criteria established by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) to ensure that credit is accurately and fairly distributed among those who have made significant intellectual contributions to a research paper.

Mandatory Criteria for Authorship
Authorship at JIHSI is not merely a matter of participation but a reflection of intellectual responsibility. To be listed as an author, an individual must meet all four of the following criteria:
1.    Substantial Contributions: Significant involvement in the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the research.
2.    Drafting and Revision: Drafting the manuscript or revising it critically for important intellectual content, particularly regarding the theoretical frameworks of Islamic humanities or social inquiry.
3.    Final Approval: Giving final approval of the version to be published.
4.    Accountability: Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.
Individuals who do not meet all four criteria should not be listed as authors but should instead be recognized in the Acknowledgements section.

Role of the Corresponding Author
The corresponding author is the individual who takes primary responsibility for communication with the journal during the manuscript submission, peer review, and publication process. Their responsibilities include:
•    Ensuring that all individuals who meet the authorship criteria are included in the author list and that no one who does not meet the criteria is included.
•    Providing the journal with the signed Copyright Transfer Agreement and disclosure of any Conflicts of Interest.
•    Acting as the point of contact for queries regarding the research methodology, data reproducibility, and any ethical inquiries post-publication.

Acknowledgements (Non-Author Contributors)
JIHSI encourages the recognition of contributors who provided technical help, writing assistance, or general support but do not meet the full criteria for authorship. These may include:
•    Language editors or translators specializing in Islamic primary sources.
•    Field assistants or data collectors involved in empirical fieldwork.
•    Departmental heads who provided general administrative support.
•    Funding agencies or organizations that provided financial support for the study.
Authors must obtain written permission from any individuals mentioned in the Acknowledgements section, as such mentions may imply endorsement of the study's findings.

Changes to Authorship
Any request to add, remove, or rearrange author names in the authorship list must be made before the manuscript has been accepted. Such requests must be sent to the Editor-in-Chief by the corresponding author and must include:
1.    A clear reason for the change in the author list.
2.    Written confirmation (via email or letter) from all authors—including those being added or removed—stating that they agree with the change.
In accordance with COPE guidelines, JIHSI will suspend the processing of the manuscript if an authorship dispute arises until the matter is resolved by the authors' institution or by mutual agreement.
